Vacancies of doctors to be filled soon: Minister

Special Correspondent

Not to insist on appointment through Employment Exchange

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Efforts are on to fill the vacancies of doctors in the district, said Tourism Minister A. Miller here on Thursday.

Presiding over a grievances redressal mass contact programme, he lamented that the reluctance of doctors to join duty here had become a serious problem. The government was aware of the difficulties faced by the people. Even those who joined duty here were not interested in continuing. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had decided to appoint qualified medical personnel, who were available locally.

Stating that even the formality of appointing through the Employment Exchange would not be insisted upon, he said that within two or three months all the hospitals were expected to have adequate number of doctors.

Adverting to the Rs. 28-crore subsidy scheme, he said that it was the first of its kind being implemented by a State Government and added that the benefits would reach the growers directly.

The main objective of conducting grievances redressal programmes in different taluks was to provide a chance to the people to air their grievances without having to travel long distances and also ensure quick solution. Officials should ensure that eligible persons were not denied the benefits of various welfare schemes, he added.

Referring to the free cycle scheme being implemented by the Government, he said that it would benefit 5.75 lakh students. Though many roads in the Nilgiris had been improved at a sizable cost, they had been damaged in the heavy rain last year.

Nilgiris Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar, who presided, said that work on beautifying the Charing Cross area at an estimated cost of Rs. 39 lakhs would be completed soon.

The entire area would wear a new look before the commencement of the second season in the hill station. Claiming that the self-help group concept had helped a great deal in the development women, he said that during the current year it was proposed to change the training pattern to suit the requirements of different areas.

Ooty MLA H. M. Raju said that steps should be taken to establish an Industrial Cooperative (INDCO) tea factory at Nanjanad near here. The water distribution system in Ooty should be streamlined.

District Social Welfare Officer Gnanaguru said that top priority should be accorded to educating girls. Revenue Divisional Officer, Coonoor, S. Murthy welcomed the gathering. Municipal chairperson P. Lalitha was among those who participated. Mr. Miller received petitions and distributed welfare assistance at the function.
