CPI cadres block traffic in Tiruvarur, Thanjavur

Rameswaram Express held at Thiruthuraipoondi

THANJAVUR: : Traffic came to a standstill in Tiruvarur district and was affected in some parts of Thanjavur district as cadres of the Communist Party of India (CPI) organised road rokos on Thursday, demanding Cauvery water release from Karnataka.

Train services were also affected, as the cadres organised rail roko. The Chennai-Rameswaram Express was stopped at Thiruthuraipoondi and the Thiruthuraipoondi-Mayiladuthurai passenger at Alakudi.

The police arrested 2,000 cadres. They demanded that the Centre take steps to get Cauvery water from Karnataka. At Thanjavur, the workers, led by V. Durai Manickam, general secretary, Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam, tried to enter the railway junction to block trains. But they were arrested.

The cadres, led by G. Palanisamy, Thiruithuraipoondi MLA, stopped the Rameswaram Express at Thiruthuraipoondi. 50 cadres including Mr. Palanisamy, were arrested.

The train, which arrived at 5.30 a.m., was blocked till 9.30 a.m. When it reached Pondi, it was again blocked. Later it was sent back to Thiruthuraipoondi.

The cadres blocked buses at the old bus station at Thanjavur. They were arrested. At Karambayam near Pattukottai, women stopped traffic, holding gruel in palm leaves. Traffic on the Pattukottai-Thanjavur road was affected for most part of the day.

Traffic came to a standstill in Tiruvarur district, as road blockade was organised at Keelapalam in Mannargudi, Thattankoil, Kambankudi, Kottur, Kothamangalam, Thirupathur, Royanallur on the Mannargudi-Thiruthuraipoondi road, Alathampadi, Kachanam, Mavur on the Thiruthuraipoondi-Tiruvarur road and Koradachery, Ammaiyappan and Needamangalam on the Thanjavur-Tiruvarur road.

Shops remained closed at Thiruthuraipoondi and Muthupettai.
