CHENNAI: A writ petition seeking to direct the Chennai Corporation Commissioner to furnish a copy of the property details of Deputy Mayor Karate R. Thyagarajan and Chairman of the Town Planning Standing Committee Vetrivel has been filed in the Madras High Court. According to the petitioner Royapuram R. Mano, as per the Members of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation (Disclosure of Assets) Rules, 1973, every member of the Corporation Council, including the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor, were required to file returns on the property owned or acquired or inherited every 12 months, ending March 31. The rules required that not only the Council members concerned, but also any member of his/her family and also for all property held on lease or mortgage either in his/her name or in the name of any of his/he family member, together with details of the means by which or the sources from which such property came to be acquired or inherited should be filed as part of the returns. "When the returns are filed, it shall be placed in a council meeting and it shall be deemed to be a public document and the executive authority shall furnish a copy on demand," Mr. Mano said in his petition. When the matter came up before Justice K. Raviraja Pandian, he adjourned the matter by a week.
