Police to crack down on unauthorised parking

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The focus of the police this week will be initiating action against `unauthorised parking' in the city, R. Nataraj, Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, said here on Thursday.

Talking to journalists after restoring stolen property to the owners, Mr. Nataraj said the enforcement wing of the Traffic Police would be entrusted with the work of taking action against such violations, he said.

The Commissioner said in the last one week, they arrested 23 persons and 10 were detained under the Goondas Act. Since January this year, 350 persons were detained under the Goondas Act, he said.

Drunken driving cases were filed against 210 persons last week, and in the last six months 4,544 persons were booked for drunken driving, Mr Nataraj said.

Answering a question on the arrest of four persons, including two former members of a Tamil extremists organisation (since banned), Mr. Nataraj said they were interrogating them. Their arrest averted a murder of a member of the banned outfit.

Talking about the stealing of cash from the employees of a steel firm on, Anna Salai, the Commissioner said police had specific clues and the culprits would soon be arrested.
