NEW DELHI:
Top industry representatives met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday, ahead of an Indo-U.S. Business Council meeting in Washington during his visit from July 18 to 21.
Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani, Y.C. Deveshwar, Deepak Parikh and Nandan Nilekani attended the meeting, Prime Minister's media adviser Sanjaya Baru told presspersons here.
The top 10 chief executive officers from both sides will attend the council meeting. It will also be used as a forum to attract investments to India.
The representatives said industry played an important role in the current scenario and it was a unique opportunity to step up investment. Business could act as a bridge between India and the U.S.
Mr. Baru said the council meeting was a private sector initiative.
Asked whether Dr. Singh and U.S. President George W. Bush would address the meeting, he said the issue was being worked out. He denied that foreign direct investment in retail trade came up for discussion at Thursday's meeting.
Earlier, Mr. Ambani met Finance Minister P. Chadambaram and other senior officials in the Ministry. UNI
