COIMBATORE: In a significant breakthrough in the series of sandalwood theft cases, the Coimbatore City Police on Thursday arrested six persons and recovered logs weighing nearly 50 kg and implements used for felling and smuggling them. Talking to reporters, City Police Commissioner Karan Singha said that a special police team was formed under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime, Vidya D. Kulkarni to probe into the theft cases. The team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police S. Jayapandian deployed policemen in civil dress to search for the smuggled sandalwood. The Commissioner said that the experience of some of the constables in Armed Reserve Police who were part of the Special Task Force (formed to nab forest brigand Veerappan) came in handy. The special team, which was also probing into cases of robbery, chain snatching and waylaying, arrested Arun (20) and Siva alias Sivakumar (24) on Marudhamalai road on Thursday morning for waylaying a motorist. Based on their confession, the team arrested four more accused - Sampathkumar (26) of TVS Nagar, Sai Prasad (21) of Veerakeralam, Prabhakar (29) of Poosaripalayam and Krishnan alias Krishnamurthy (26) of Thondamuthur. The gangsters were in the adverse records of the police. Preliminary investigations led to prima facie evidence of the gang's involvement along with three others, who were at large, in seven reported cases of sandalwood thefts in Race Course, Sai Baba Colony and R.S. Puram police station limits during the last few months. The gang used to fell trees and smuggle the logs to Walayar (Kerala - Tamil Nadu border) in day-time. They would sell the logs to brokers at Rs. 600 to Rs. 700 a kg, Mr. Singha said. The police are on the lookout for the remaining three accused. Even as this breakthrough came, a case of sandalwood theft was reported in Bharathi Park area on Thursday morning.
