KOCHI: Hundreds of people, including State and district leaders of all parties, Government officials and party activists, paid their last respects to the CPI leader and former Chief Minister P.K. Vasudevan Nair at the makeshift pandal set up here. The KSRTC Volvo bus, with wreaths hung on the sides, carrying the mortal remains of the CPI leader was at the venue in Vyttila for about an hour before it proceeded to the native place of the late leader in Pulluvazhi, Perumbavoor, where the cremation was arranged. Pinarayi Vijayan, State secretary of CPI(M); former Ministers T.K. Ramakrishnan, K. Chandrasekharan; Sebastian Paul, MP; MLAs T.H. Mustafa and K. Babu; trade union leaders K.N. Ravindranath, M.M. Lawrence; Kochi Mayor C.M. Dinesh Mani, RSP leader K.V. Thamarakshan; K.P. Dhanapalan, president District Congress Committee, and National Congress (Indira) leader K.B. Mohammed Kutty Master were among the political leaders who paid their last respects in Kochi. District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish placed a wreath on behalf of the district administration. Ernakulam Press Club president P.K. Phalgunan placed a wreath on behalf of the journalist community here. A number of office-bearers of various employees' unions reached the venue to pay tributes to the leader. Joseph Mar Gregorius, Synod Secretary of the Jacobite Church, also paid his respects to the CPI leader. Party activists thronged the venue at Vyttila Junction much before the scheduled time. In fact, people started gathering since late evening itself. By 8 p.m., a good crowd had assembled at the venue. The police was present in a large posse with the Highway Police joining in. One side of the bypass road at Vyttila was blocked and traffic was diverted through the other side of the road.
