NC(I) youth wing leaders to observe fast

KOCHI: National Youth Congress (Indira) leaders will go on a one-day hunger strike on Monday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in protest against the Government's use of force by way of police action against students. District-level leaders and presidents of various mandalams will takje past in the hunger strike at Menaka Junction. State president of the party Ibrahim Kutty Kallar will inaugurate the fast. — Staff Reporter

SFI to resume stir

KOCHI: Students Federation of India (SFI) will resume its agitation against the management of St. Albert's College, as the Vice-Chancellor of M.G. University has failed to take action against the unscientific changing of college timings, said a press release issued by the SFI. Students had boycotted classes for two weeks in support of the SFI agitation.

However, the classes were resumed on the promise that the subject would be discussed by the university Syndicate. The SFI release said the Vice-Chancellor had dismissed the opinion of the majority of the Syndicate members on the issue.

An inquiry report commissioned by the university about why centralised evaluation was held in the college was not accepted by the Vice-Chancellor, said the release. The report was said to have come down heavily on the college management. — Staff Reporter

Entries invited for award

KOCHI: Applications have been invited from children of members of Ernakulam District Gazetted Officers Association for exemplary performance in the Class X examinations.

Attested mark list of the candidate along with the KGOA member's official and permanent address with phone numbers should reach District Secretary, Kerala Gazetted Officer's Association, near North Railway Station, Kochi -18 by July 31. — Staff Reporter

Plea for landing centre at Vallarpadam

KOCHI: The Fisheries Coordination Committee in the district has decided to intensify its protest demanding an auction centre and landing centre at Vallarpadam.

As part of it, the committee members will line up the boats on July 27 on the sea near such places where they want the auction and landing centre. On July 28, the committee will also auction fishes from the demarcated place.

State leaders in the fishing industry and political leaders would also participate in the protests. — Staff Reporter

Ex-servicemen plan protest

KOCHI : The National Ex-servicemen Co-ordination Committee (Kerala) will take out a march to the Assembly on July 20 demanding concession of Value Added Tax for grocery and liquor items in the Defence canteen, which the Government had taken off from April 17.

A statement by K.P. Saidalwi, general secretary, said that before introducting VAT, there was 50 per cent tax concession on grocery and 35 per cent on liquor. — Staff Reporter
