IN THE EYE OF A STORM: A view of the construction site where a residential complex is coming up next to the Mount Carmel College in Bangalore.
BANGALORE: "Susan, a student of our college, came under the tipper used for construction and was killed on the spot. This accident occurred on December 18, 2004 in the premises next to our college where the group housing project by a major firm is underway," said Sister Juanita, Principal, Mount Carmel College, Pre-University Section, here on Thursday. She told presspersons that the residential complex is supposed to have 350 dwelling units. This means more vehicles on the roads near the college. "It means added burden on the part of the police or college authorities. Mount Carmel College has about 5,000 students and their safety is at stake," said Sister Juanita. "The walls of our college have developed cracks with all the traffic and construction around. The students and the faculty are suffering from respiratory disorders, throat pain, and skin allergies because of dust from the construction site. "The drilling noise at the site causes disturbances in the classes. The work at the site goes on all through the day and night. The dust, noise and the cracks have made the lives of teachers and the students miserable," said the college principal. Sister Juanita said that the Lokayukta Justice M.N.Venkatachala and MLA Katta Subramanya Naidu had supported the college in its struggle against constuction.
MLA's charge
The MLA alleged that all the building bylaws have been flouted by the builders. Following the death of the college student, though the initial work order issued by the BMP was withdrawn, the work on the site is proceeding unhindered. The BMP, while approving the building pla, had stipulated that a separate road needs to be laid to the east of the construction site, which has not been done. As a result all the building material are being transported on the service road, next to the campus, he added.
