`Varuna japam' today

MADURAI: Farmers of Kallandiri have organised a `varuna japam,' a prayer to invoke the blessings of the Rain God, at Periyar dam on Friday morning.

Apart from the ryots, officials of the Public Works Department, led by K. Pandikarupanan, Executive Engineer, Periyar-Vaigai Basin Circle, will participate in the prayer.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam stood at 118 feet with an inflow of 1,025 cusecs and a discharge of 600 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 27.53 feet with an inflow of 189 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 2,446 mcft.

Periyar dam recorded 22 mm of rainfall, followed by Vaigai dam at 9 mm, and Tekkadi and Andipatti at 3 mm.

Run over

A 65-year-old man was run over by a train near the railway station here on Thursday. According to police sources, K. Ganesan of Ellis Nagar was trying to cross the track this morning when he was hit by the train.

The body was shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital for post-mortem. The Railway Police have registered a case.

Power shutdown

There will be a power shutdown between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday in the following areas owing to maintenance work to be carried out at Uranganpatti sub-station: Urganpatti, Thozhilpettai, Varichiyur, Kalimangalam, Sakkudi, Sengottai, Thatchanendal, Vilanthur, Oodaipatti, Rajakkaur, Ilamanur, Sakkimangalam, Karseri, Andarkottaram, Karupayoorani, Masthanpatti, Kavikappanvilakku and Othakadai, according to a TNEB release.

Office-bearers

The following persons were elected office-bearers of the Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection Centre, Madurai, for 2005-`08: S. Logaguru (president), A. Subramanian (general secretary), and N. Nazma (treasurer).

The association resolved to change its name to "Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection Centre, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry." — Staff Reporter.
