Lawyers resume work

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Lawyers practising at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court resumed work on Thursday bringing the week-long "suspension of work" to protest against the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code to an end.

The general body of the Madurai Bench High Court Advocates Association thanked the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh; the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa; the Union Home Minister, Law Minister, Minister for Information Technology and the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, for their intervention in the issue.

Boycott to end

Advocates of the Madurai Bar Association on Thursday resolved to end their 29-day boycott of courts and return to work from Monday. The decision came following an announcement made by the Centre that amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code would be deferred.

The advocates organised a dharna in front of the district court premises after the city police denied them permission to take out a procession through the main streets. "Though we had planned to organise a procession defying the police order, it was called off in view of the announcement made by the Chief Minister to pass an emergency ordinance to prevent the amendments and the assurance of the Centre to defer the Criminal Procedure Code Amendments Act, 2005," the secretary of the association, A.K. Ramasamy, said.

The Madurai advocates, who were the first to protest by boycotting courts, would not hesitate to agitate again if attempts were made to enforce the amendments to the criminal law, he added.
