Maoist killed in encounter in agency

VISAKHAPATNAM: A district committee member of the CPI(Maoist) was killed in an encounter with a police team in the agency area on Friday. A huge quantity of explosive material was recovered from the encounter site. The Maoist was identified as Moolakoti Ramanjaneyulu, 47, alias Kailasam alias Ramanna. - Special Correspondent

Police, Pratighatana naxals exchange fire

WARANGAL: There was an exchange of fire between the police and Prathighatana naxalites near Addagutta village in Mulug Venkatapur mandal on Friday. The police suspect that there would be about 20 naxalites and the zonal committee leaders Prasad and Govardhan might have escaped. - Staff Reporter

28 bombs seized

from reservoir

CUDDAPAH: The Mydukur rural police seized 28 country-made bombs from the Brahmamsagar reservoir of Telugu Ganga project in Brahmamgari Matham mandal. Ramachandra, CI, who inspected the place, suspected that the bombs might have been manufactured a year ago. - Staff Reporter

Oil tanker hijacked; owner killed by gang

KHAMMAM: A six-member gang hijacked an oil tanker after killing its owner on Aswaraopet - Tallada road on Thursday night. As the vehicle came near Achyutapuram, the gangsters overpowered vehicle owner Uppalapatai Trinadharaju and strangled him to death. The cleaner was thrown out before they hijacked the vehicle. - Staff Reporter

Four prisoners escape

KHAMMAM: Four prisoners on their way to the Warangal Central Prison with police escort managed to jump out of a moving train and escape near Garla station, according to the Armed Reserve sources. When the train slowed down, four of the seven prisoners managed to escape with the handcuffs. - Staff Reporter

Information sought on Naval officer

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Eastern Naval Command has sought information on the Naval officer, who is reported missing from May 18. Sub-Lieutenant Ashish Popli of INS Sharabh, 24, is six feet tall, fair complexioned with short hair. Information can be intimated to the local police or Maritime Operations Centre at Naval base (Ph. 2577885, 2577240 and 2812435). - Staff Reporter

Civic Commissioner faces Collector's ire

Kakinada: East Godavari Collector Anil Kumar Singhal while expressing his displeasure over the unauthorised absence of the Municipal Commissioner of Peddapuram to the Commissioners' meeting here on Friday recommended for his immediate suspension. Mr. Anil Kumar questioned the incharge Commissioner as to who sanctioned the leave when an import meeting is scheduled. - Correspondent

Heavy rain in Rayalaseema

HYDERABAD: Many places in Rayalaseema received heavy rain on Friday as the South-West monsoon turned vigorous over the region. There was also rain at a few places in coastal Andhra and Telangana. Hindupur and Rayadurg recorded a rainfall of 7 cm each. There will be light to moderate rain at a few places in all regions of the State on Saturday, according to a forecast issued by the State Met Office here. - Special Correspondent

IG inspects Tirumala temple

TIRUMALA: The Rayalaseema zone Inspector-General, Sambasiva Rao, on Friday inspected the Hill temple of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala, as well as its surroundings. The inspection assumed importance, as Mr. Rao is the second high ranked officer after the DGP, Swaranjit Sen, to inspect the temple, in the aftermath of the abortive militant attack on the makeshift temple at Ayodhya recently. - Staff Reporter

ISKCON signs pact

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati centre of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) on Friday exchanged a memorandum of understanding with the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, for taking up the mid-day meal scheme in the Tirupati rural and urban mandals, covering initially 3,000 elementary and upper primary schools. While the MoU on behalf of the Government was signed by the Director of School Education on behalf of the ISKCON it was signed by the head of its Tirupati centre, Revathi Raman Das. - Special Correspondent

Ex gratia sanctioned

CUDDAPAH: The Collector, G. Ashok Kumar, said Rs. 9.50 lakhs was sanctioned towards payment of ex gratia for 2004-05 to the kin of 19 accident victims. Each bereaved family would be paid an ex gratia of Rs. 50,000 under Apatbandhu scheme. - Staff Reporter

Arrested

KURNOOL: The police arrested an inter-district dacoit, identified as Ramesh alias Sankar, here on Friday. He was allegedly responsible for chain snatching and highway robberies in Kurnool, Mahabubnagar, Cuddapah and Prakasam districts. - Staff Reporter

Man murdered

KURNOOL: An unidentified person, aged around 32, was found murdered on Thursday night. His body with injuries was found on the bed of a stream near Mamidalapadu. - Staff Reporter
