NEW DELHI: Anti-Salman Khan protests rocked many parts of the country on Friday, a day after an expose of his alleged links with the underworld, forcing several cinema halls to stop screening his film Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya on the day of its release. Activists of the BJP, the VHP, the Bajrang Dal and the Trinamool Congress staged demonstrations and tore posters outside cinema halls in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal. They urged the people not to see the film starring "a man who has admitted to having links with the underworld." Bajrang Dal activists burnt effigies of the actor at Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior. They created a ruckus outside cinema halls in Ahmedabad and Bharuch, while Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha workers held demonstrations denouncing the actor's alleged connections with the underworld. Security was intensified near cinema halls. The issue also figured in the Maharashtra Assembly. Deputy Chief Minister R. R. Patil said the Government would make a statement in the house on July 20. Cinema hall owners and distributors withdrew screening fearing violence, a senior police official said. PTI
