UDHAGAMANDALAM:
The Queen of Hills can now boast of another feather in its cap. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) line between Udhagamandalam and Mettupalayam has been granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO.
Railway sources told The Hindu on Friday that at a meeting of UNESCO authorities, which was now under way at Durban, a decision to include the `toy train' in the list of heritage sites had been taken. With the demand for such a recognition being long felt by the people here, a team from the UNESCO inspected the line last year.
With the line getting the coveted status, it would get some funds annually from UNESCO. The sources said that though the line was a loss-making one, it was one of the most prestigious for the Ministry of Railways.
