Woman bank official washed away in Amberpet; two others killed
|
HYDERABAD:
A fierce spell of rain on Friday evening brought the city to a grinding halt. In three hours flat, there was 6 cm of rain, said to be the highest in such a short span, submerging most parts of the city in waist-deep water.
The flash rain claimed the life of an assistant bank manager, Durga Kumari, who was swept away in swirling water when she fell off the motorcycle driven by her husband into an open manhole near Zinda Tilismathnagar at Amberpet. Her body is yet to be traced. Another unidentified person fell into the manhole at Khairatabad. At Bolarum, lightning claimed the life of a 35-year-old man, V. Kumaraiah.
With the city's civic network crumbling yet again, officials of the MCH, the HMWSSB and the Traffic Police were out on the roads trying to salvage the situation. Roads turned into huge pools of floodwater and even railway tracks at Khairatabad were under water. As many as 107 houses were completely damaged and about 500 families evacuated to six relief camps.
