Examine all applications thoroughly and objectively, officials told

MADURAI: The election authorities have received as many as 19 lakh proxy applications in form no. 6, seeking inclusion in the electoral rolls recently and currently efforts were on to verify their genuineness, claimed Deputy Chief Election Commissioner of India R. C. Mishra, and State Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday shortly after attending the Collectors' conference on electoral roll revision here, they said the election officials had already informed all the political parties in the State to ascertain the truth from them and provide their feedback to the election authorities at the earliest so as to enable the officials take appropriate action.

They, however, maintained that the exact number of fake applications could be known only after the disposal of all the applications.

The supervisory officials who have been directed to verify the applications have been told to lay emphasis on examining all the applications thoroughly and objectively.

Action not possible now

They said taking action against the officials was not possible at this juncture as the process of verifying the legitimacy of the applications was on, adding that action either on individual or organisations could be initiated at a later stage.

"It is too early to pass judgment on any particular political party for the bulk filing of applications," they said in reply to another specific query.

Since the last three days the officials visited several districts, including Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai and intensively interacted with the Collectors and other officials.
