Gang of robbers arrested

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Five persons allegedly involved in cases of robbery, chain-snatching and auto theft have been arrested by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad of the South-West Delhi police. The police claim to have solved eight criminal cases with their arrest.

According to the police, a team, led by Inspector Rajiv Rattan, had laid a trap near Inderpuri on Friday following a tip-off about the suspects. They appeared on the scene in a white Maruti car around 8 p.m. However, when the police tried to stop them, they fled. The police then chased the suspects and intercepted them on Todapur Road.

One of the suspects also opened fire in a bid to escape but the police retaliated and overpowered all of them. Those arrested have been identified as Wasim (20), Subhash (26), Ashish (22), Ram Lochan (29) and Rajbir (45). The police recovered a country-made revolver, live cartridges, knives, iron rods and Rs. 20,000 in cash from the accused. The car in which they were fleeing had been robbed from one Ashok Kumar at Moti Nagar in West Delhi on May 14.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to having been involved in seven more robberies. Early this year, they had robbed a businessman at Rohini in North-West Delhi of Rs. 1.25 lakhs in cash and some documents. In Punjabi Bagh, they had robbed a businessman of Rs. 1.05 lakhs on April 16.

At Dwarka in South-West Delhi, they had robbed another businessman, Kamal Tyagi, on June 19. They were also involved in two chain- snatchings in Inderpuri.

The police said the gang would get information about potential targets from Rajbir. He used to change his jobs as everyday jobs boy in various shops in Inderpuri and gather information about potential targets. The gang, led by Wasim, used to give him money for the same.

Wasim, who belonged to a poor family, earlier used to drive a school van.
