CHENNAI: The launch on Saturday of the Wild Macaw Club provides a chance for outdoor lovers to learn more about the wonderful options that India has to offer for travellers. The club, started by Reliance Infocomm, has tied up with the World Wildlife Fund, Dakshanachitra and Jungle Lodges and Resorts Ltd to provide a worthwhile educational experience to its members. Speaking at the inauguration of the club, the noted wildlife filmmaker, Shekar Dattatri, welcomed the educational value of the event. "Public awareness, and public pressure on the government is the only way to move forward to protecting India's natural heritage." The club will offer outdoor sessions, discussions, lectures, educational events at schools and Reliance Webworlds, as well as wilderness adventures, nature treks, rock-climbing, cycling and beach walks. "It is nice to see a corporation trying to make some small difference," said Mr. Dattatri. "Corporations need to make an effort to help protect India, rather than simply using resources blindly with no thought for the future." The venture represents Reliance's attempt to educate and provide awareness of outdoor tourism to its customers. "Wild Macaw aims to bring people together to enjoy the outdoors without spoiling the harmony of nature learn while you explore is the core idea," said Lakshmi Sharath, Regional Content Manager for Reliance Infocomm. To Mr. Dattatri, such clubs can be of value because "protecting our environment is a difficult task. By promoting eco-tourism and environmental awareness, people in India may begin to think about the value of nature. Currently, wildlife and conservation are non-issues. Kids are cut-off from the world of nature. We need armies of people out there to educate children. So at least this is a start." For more information, check out www.thewildmacaw.org
