RAICHUR: The Minister for Sugar and in charge of the district, Amaregouda Bayyapur, has said that the work on the administrative building of the proposed government medical college here will commence soon, and the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, is likely to lay the foundation stone for the building in the second week of August. He said the Chief Minister has agreed to lay the foundation stone for the building of the medical college and a date for the function will be finalised soon, he said. He was talking to presspersons after inspecting the site near the Government Civil Hospital here on Saturday. He said that work on the administrative building of the proposed medical college was delayed owing to technical reasons in awarding a contract for its construction. The problem has been solved and the contractor has been asked to complete all preliminary preparations and start construction work by next month, he said. The Minister said that the Government had plans to start the medical college this academic year, but it was delayed following objections raised by the Medical Council of India on the lack of an administrative building, non-appointment of lecturers and inadequate clinical facilities. A high-level meeting was held in Bangalore last week in which it was decided that work on the administrative building will begin immediately. He said that steps will be taken to appoint lecturers and provide necessary clinical facilities at the earliest.
Committee
He said the meeting also decided to form a district level committee, headed by the Deputy Commissioner, to initiate action to appoint staff and lecturers for the college in coordination with the Secretary of the Department of Medical Education. The committee has been asked to speed up procedures and finalise the appointment of staff and lecturers in the next two months. It has been proposed to commence the first year MBBS course from this academic year if the Government is able to obtain necessary permission from the Medical Council of India, he said. N.S. Bose Raju, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, said the Government has sanctioned a Rs. 20-crore grant for constructing the building and has earmarked Rs. 6 crores in this year's budget. It is expected that construction work on the college building will be completed in the next few months and the process of appointing staff and lecturers will be complete by October.
