Land yet to be finalised for setting up APSP unit

Staff Reporter

Jail and police departments fail to come to consensus

  • 200 acres of land required for the purpose
  • Jails department refuses to part with land in open-air jail
  • Ruling party leaders offering sites in their constituencies
  • Political intervention can settle issue, says revenue official

ANANTAPUR: Lack of coordination between the jails and police departments, indifference of the district administration and disinterest among the ruling party politicians have been delaying the setting up of a new APSP battalion sanctioned to the district.

The departments concerned are unable to finalise about 200 acres of land required for the purpose. While the APSP officials have evinced interest in the lands around the district headquarters town, a couple of the ruling party leaders have suggested sites in their constituencies.

    Unutilised land

Though the required extent of land was available with the open-air jail at Reddypalli near here and was approved by the APSP officials, the Jails Department refused to part with the land. The open-air jail has about 700 acres of land and about half of it is not in use. The land was also inspected and allotted by the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, during his visit to the district in May.

The Jails Department had reasoned that about 6,000 trees in its avenue plantation would be chopped if the land were given for the APSP battalion.
