`Avoid antibiotics'

NEW DELHI: Indiscriminate use of antibiotics should be avoided, said K K Aggarwal, President of the Delhi Medical Association, while delivering a lecture to practicing doctors organised by the association over the weekend.

"It is important to remember that not all fevers are caused due to infections and not all infections are caused by bacteria. The majority of infections seen in general practice are viral in origin and antibiotics can neither treat viral infections nor prevent secondary bacterial infections in these patients,'' he added.

Further he pointed out that viral infections take seven days with antibiotics and one week without them. Most sore throats are viral in nature. Presence of a running nose, running eyes or sneezing indicates non-bacterial infections and does not require antibiotics, he added.
