Guide to the lifelines of the country

The Railways have again gone in for innovation to make its timetable user-friendly. More features, with valuable information, have been added, and tables drawn up for easy reference. The timetable has just hit the stands.

As in the previous edition, information on trains run by Southern Railway, South Western Railway, South Central Railway and Konkan Railway has been compiled to make a comprehensive timetable.

Pictures of a country boat moving through a backwater in Kerala, Mahabalipuram temple in Tamil Nadu, Infocity in Hyderabad, Vidhan Soudha (legislature building) in Karnataka and a Goa beach, along with that of a train running on the Aroor bridge, figure on the cover. "It has been designed to make it more user-friendly and easy to read," says a note.

The timetable starts with organisational details of the zonal railways. What follows is a step-by-step user guide for easy browsing: four simple methods have been listed out and tips provided, along with an illustration on how to locate the correct tables, in the 325-page book, priced at Rs. 30.

There is an illustration on how to read a table. One can opt for the map with table numbers, train and destination table, train number index or the station index for locating a train.

Zone-wise indices for express and passenger trains and stations, and indices for express and passenger trains have been provided.

In the passenger information section, important telephone numbers of all zones and divisions, advance reservation procedures, travel concessions, refund rules, compensation and claims, amenities at stations, retiring rooms and dormitories, list of trains with pantry cars, and fares of passenger, Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi trains are included.
