China wins two golds

MONTREAL: : China picked up where it left off from the Athens Olympics, winning two gold medals in synchronised diving at the World aquatics championships on Sunday.

The Chinese won six of eight gold medals in Athens, where the United States was shut out of the medals for the first time in 92 years.

Jia Tong and Yuan Pei Lin finished first in women's 10-metre synchronised diving with 351.60 points, easily outdistancing Australians Loudy Tourky and Chantelle Newberry.

He Chong and Wang Feng won the men's 3m synchronised springboard title with 384.42 points.

The Chinese are showcasing some of their younger divers in Montreal to build experience for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The day's other medals were awarded in 5-km open water swimming.

The results:

Diving: Men: Synchronized 3m springboard: 1. Wang Feng and He Chong (Chn) 384.42; 2. Tobias Schellenberg and Andreas Wels (Ger) 364.59; 3. Justin and Troy Dumais (U.S.) 360.27.

Women: Synchronized 10m platform: 1. Jia Tong and Yuan Pei Lin (Chn) 351.60; 2. Loudy Tourky and Chantelle Newbery (Aus) 334.89; 3. Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito (Can) 328.80.

Open water swimming: Men: 5km: 1. Thomas Lurz (Ger) 51:17.2; 2. Chip Peterson (U.S.) 51:18.8; 3. Simone Ercoli (Ita) 51:18.9. Women: 5km: 1. Larisa Ilchenko (Rus) 55:40.1; 2. Margy Keefe (U.S.) 55:44.3; 3. Edith van Dijk (Ned) 55:46.6.

Water polo: Women: preliminaries: Venezuela drew with Cuba 6-6; Hungary bt China 18-4; Spain drew with U.S. 6-6; Russia bt Uzbekistan 18-0; Greece bt New Zealand 9-4; Australia bt Germany 15-2. — AP
