Inter-State bus terminus to be operational in August

Special Correspondent

Spread over nine acres, it has been designed to handle 1,700 buses a day

  • All long-distance buses will start and terminate at Mysore Road bus stand
  • The complex will have three tiers
  • Parking lot to accommodate 70 cars and 200 two-wheelers
  • Subways within the bus stand for pedestrians

BANGALORE: The three-tier bus station of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation at Byatrayanpura on Mysore Road is likely to be operational in August.

The Rs. 19.86-crore bus station for which land was acquired and cleared some years ago was to have been completed by March end but factors such a strike by lorries transporting sand for the construction resulted in a delay.

The construction work is said to be over now with finishing work such as fire protection systems, bus bays and platforms, and toilets completed.

The remaining work is expected to be completed by July end, the project engineers said. Despite the delay, there was no cost escalation, they added.

Planned to be an inter-State bus terminus, the Mysore Road bus station is expected to ease congestion at the Kempe Gowda Central Bus Station.

The new terminus will accommodate all long distance buses of KSRTC towards destinations such as Mysore, Madikeri, places in Kerala and to Ooty.

The new terminus will be used for a commercial complex on upper floors. It is built on three-tiers, spread over nine acres. The bus maintenance depot will be at the ground level, bus arrivals and departures at the second level and bays for city feeder services at the top-level, which will be aligned on level with Mysore Road. The terminus has been designed to handle 1,700 buses each day.

When it is operational, there will be parking lots for 70 cars and 200 two-wheelers, a pedestrian subway from the road, a restaurant, shower rooms and toilets, a large concourse and waiting areas for passengers and other amenities not found in older bus terminals. Pedestrians can use the subway to move from end of the terminus to another safely unlike in the main bus station where they have to avoid incoming and departing buses.

There will be modern signboards and a clear public address system to make announcements about arrivals and departures.
