PONDICHERRY: The general secretary of Dalit Panthers, Tol. Tirumavalavan, has urged the Pondicherry Administration to promulgate an ordinance to protect the rights of Dalits of Pondicherry origin in reservations. Addressing newsmen here on Monday, Mr. Tirumavalavan said that a joint meeting of functionaries and office bearers of the central wing and constituency wise units of the Pondicherry wing of the party held in Chennai on July 16 adopted resolutions reiterating the plea to protect Dalits. He said it was indeed a sorry spectacle that certain "divisive forces" were trying to drive a wedge between the local Dalits and the Dalits residing in the Union Territory after migration from the other States after 1964. His party was firm that the "rights of local Dalits to social justice" and also the "democratic rights of those who had migrated to Pondicherry from other States" should be protected. He said with a view to arriving at a permanent solution for reservation in job opportunities for the Dalits of Pondicherry origin and the Dalits who had migrated from other States, the administration should launch enumeration of these two sections separately. The Government should then decide on proportional basis of reservation for them without affecting either of the two sections. As far as enumeration of the Dalits on migration to Pondicherry was concerned, it should cover the period after 1964 and up to February 11 this year (when a verdict was given by the Supreme court). Regarding reservation in educational institutions for Dalits in Pondicherry, he said the party had urged the administration to give priority for the Dalits of Pondicherry origin. Mr. Tirumavalavan said a demonstration would be held in Pondicherry on August 8 in support of these demands. The DPI leader said a delegation would meet the Lt. Governor at the end of the demonstration and present a memorandum to him.
