Language teachers warn of agitation

Staff Reporter

Allege discrimination in promotions

KOLLAM: Language teachers, under the banner of the Bhasha Adhyapaka Aikya Vedi, will hold a mass dharna in front of the Government Secretariat on Wednesday.

At a press conference here on Monday, Vedi general convener Surendran Kadakode and vice-chairman P.V. Daniel alleged discrimination against language teachers in promotion as headmasters.

Promotions are considered on the basis of seniority, qualification and departmental test.

But when it comes to considering language teachers for promotion, there is an unjustified stipulation that this category of teachers should be in possession of a Teachers Training Course (TTC) certificate.

At the primary school level, till the time of promotion the TTC holders and language teachers are on a par in all respects.

The language teachers are even included in the promotion list.

But when the time comes for promotion, the language teachers are discriminated on grounds of not having the required TTC certificate, they alleged.

Things are the same at the high school level too.

While language teachers in this section have completed the requisite training in lieu of a B.A. or B.Ed., and even when they are included in the promotion list, they are denied promotion saying that they lacked the basic requisite of a B.Ed. degree.

This is most unfortunate and till corrective measures are taken, the language teachers will go forward with their agitation against the system, the leaders said.

The Aikya Vedi is a combine of nine associations of language teachers in the State.
