Vasan warns partymen

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president G.K. Vasan has warned that disciplinary action would be taken against party workers indulging in activities that damaged the party's image.

Reacting to incidents in the party headquarters here a few days ago, Mr. Vasan, talking to newsmen here on Monday, hoped that such unfortunate incidents would not be repeated anywhere in the State.

Describing the arrest of the North Chennai District Congress Committee president, R. Mano, as a political vendetta by ruling party men in collaboration with the police, Mr. Vasan said the party would face such "onslaughts" of the ruling party politically. He said the party would not be a mute spectator to the "atrocities" of the ruling party. — Special Correspondent

Auto driver stages suicide drama

KARAIKUDI: A 30-year-old auto driver created anxious moments for more than an hour by climbing a 40-foot microwave tower here on Monday and threatened to commit suicide.

Murugan of Servar Oorani climbed the tower and shouted to the police that he would jump down. He said police were always targeting him whenever theft was reported in the region.

A police team arrived there and assured him that his complaint would be considered. He came down after persuasion. — Staff Reporter

Special trains

CHENNAI: The following special trains will be operated by Southern Railway to clear rush of passengers.

Train no. 0607 Chennai Egmore-Madurai will leave Egmore at 8 p.m. on July 22 and reach Madurai at 5 a.m. the next day. In the return direction, train no. 0608 will leave Madurai at 7.15 p.m. on July 24 and arrive here at 7.30 p.m. the next day.

Train no. 0624 will leave Coimbatore at 11.45 p.m. on July 24 and arrive at Chennai Central at 8.15 a.m. the next day.

Train no. 0671 will leave Chennai Central at 5.15 p.m. on July 22 and reach Secunderabad at 7.45 a.m. the next day.

Reservation for the special trains will begin on July 19 (Tuesday), says a railway release. — Special Correspondent

TTDC announces package tour

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation will introduce an integrated pilgrim tour covering 108 Amman temples from July 22. The tariff for the five-day tour per person is Rs. 2,100. The price includes transportation in a luxury coach, accommodation and temple darshan. Details can be had on phone (25383333/25389857), says TTDC release. — Special Correspondent

Country bombs seized

ARIYALUR: The police arrested a volunteer of the banned Tamizhar Viduthalai Iyakkam, J. Kumaresan of Andimadam on Sunday night and seized from him two country bombs.

The arrest was effected when constables intercepted the two-wheeler on which Kumaresan was going at Olaiyur near Andimadam. As the constables were checking the vehicle, Kumaresan allegedly attempted to escape after hurling one of the bombs. The bomb, however, did not go off and the constables managed to arrest him.

The Andimamdam police produced him before the Judicial Magistrate, Rajendran, who remanded him to 15 days judicial custody. — Staff Reporter

Special buses for girivalam

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Kumbakonam division, will operate around 50 special buses to Tiruvannamalai from various parts of Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur districts on July 20 and 21 in view of the Pournami Girivalam at Arunachaleswarar Temple.

The buses will be operated from 5 p.m. on July 20 from Tiruchi, Karur, Musiri, Thuraiyur, Manapparai, Thuvarankurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Jayamkondam, according to a TNSTC release. — Special Correspondent

NAGAPATTINAM: The Collector, J.Radhakrishnan, will hold a meeting for farmers at the Collectorate here at 11 a.m. on Thursday (July 21 ) to hear grievances about agriculture and irrigation problems, according to an official release. — Staff Reporter

Plea for uninterrupted

power supply

ARIYALUR: The Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) has urged the TNEB to ensure uninterrupted power supply in Ariyalur and its surrounding areas.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the party's Perambalur district executive meeting held here recently. It pointed out that unscheduled power cuts has been causing inconvenience to the residents and sought immediate action to solve the problem. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 68.77 feet today. The inflow was 14,224 cusecs and the discharge, 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Milk vendor found murdered

TIRUNELVELI: The police are looking for the culprits, who murdered a milk vendor near here on Sunday night.

They said that M. Subramani alias Mani (23) of Udaiyaarkulam near Naduvaikurichi had gone to supply milk to his customers at Shanthi Nagar but failed to return home even after midnight. When his relatives searched for him, they found his body in the nearby forest.

Though the body was sent to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital this morning for post-mortem, it was not done immediately. So, relatives of the victim staged a road roko in front of the hospital. Police rushed to the spot and pacified them. — Staff Reporter

Traders call off strike

Nagercoil : Members of All Traders Union in Kanyakumari have decided to end their five-day strike on Sunday, which began on July 13, following the intervention of the Health Minister, N.Thalavai Sundaram, and the Hindu Religious Charitable Endowments Minister, P.C.Ramasamy, who assured them that their demands would be taken to the notice of the Chief Minister, Jayalalaithaa, for an early solution.

As many as 350 shops along the Kanyakumari beach, mainly engaged in selling handicraft items, remained closed for the past five days, in response to a strike call made by the All Traders Union of Kanyakumari. — Staff Reporter

`Drop steps against cashew nut units'

Nagercoil : The Tamil Nadu Cashew Processors and Exporters Association here has urged the Government to drop measures initiated against cashew nut factories under the Pollution Control Act. In a press release, its secretary, Vazhavar Thangappan, said that over 600 factories were functioning in the district for the past 40 years.

They roast five to 25 bags of cashew for about two hours a day emitting less smoke.

But the Government had taken action against factories, which failed to install the device for cleaning smoke that would cost around Rs. 1.5 lakh. — Staff Reporter

Free medical camp

Tuticorin: A free medical camp conducted by the Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank and Pearl City Masonic Ladies Forum concluded at Veppalodai near here on Sunday.

Sources said altogether 425 persons were treated. Doctors from the fields of cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, diabetology and ENT attended patients.

Earlier, Shilpam Kapur, president, PCMLF, inaugurated the camp. Sandeep Rai Rathore, Superintendent of Police, and senior officials of the bank were present. — Staff Reporter

One dies in accident

Ramanathapuram: A 35-year-old man was killed in a road accident at Thethanenthal near here on Monday.

Sources said Zahir Hussain, son of Kadher Mohideen of Salaigramam, was going to his village from Ramanathapuram by a two-wheeler.

A lorry coming from the opposite direction knocked him down, killing him on the spot. A case has been registered.

Water level

MADURAI: The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 118 feet with an inflow of 596 cusecs and a discharge of 600 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 29.46 feet with an inflow of 214 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 2511 mcft.
