Bangalore to host Youth Congress meet

Staff Reporter

The Chief Minister will inaugurate the conference; Rahul Gandhi to attend

BANGALORE: The Rajiv Gandhi Youth Leadership Conference, a conference of the Youth Congress of the southern States, will be held at Vidyanagar (Chikkajala) on the outskirts of Bangalore, from July 30 to August 1, the President of the Indian Youth Congress, Ashok Tanwar, said here on Monday.

Mr. Tanwar, who had a meeting with the State Youth Congress President, Dinesh Gundu Rao, and presidents and office-bearers from other southern States, said Rahul Gandhi, MP and Congress leader, who is often tipped to take over the leadership of the Youth Conference, will attend the conference and lead the delegates through the three-day meet.

The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will inaugurate the conference.

This is the fourth and final regional conference for Youth Congress leaders.

The northern regional conference in Amritsar and the western regional meet in Navi Mumbai were held recently, while the northeastern regional conference is to be held from July 23.

Mr. Tanwar said the conference will cover social issues, health, environment and education and focus on enhanced cooperation among the State units and prepare the party for the emerging young line of leaders .

Asked about the scenario in Kerala, where the former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran has parted ways with the Congress after a bitter and prolonged battle with rival factions, Mr. Tanwar said Mr. Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Kerala in August to give the party, now headed by Ramesh Chennitala, a new focus.

The Kerala State Youth Congress President, Anil Kumar, added that a recent camp in Adoor in Kerala took stock of the situation and weighed the options of the party.

Mr. Rao said the Bangalore conference will also come out with a few political resolutions that will reflect the new thinking in the party and provide a more proactive, meaningful role for young leaders.
