Test runs in Sethu channel in September 2008

CHENNAI: : Trials and test runs in the Sethusamudram channel will begin in September 2008, according to a schedule released by the Sethusamudram Corporation.

The Channel will be thrown open to traffic by November 2008. Dredging, scheduled to begin in November this year, is expected to be completed by July 2008.

A post-dredging survey will be carried out the next month. The Dredging Corporation of India has been awarded the contract to dredge 13.57 km in the Palk Bay.

For dredging of 35 km in Adam's Bridge and 40.68 km in the Palk Straits, global tenders have been called for.

The contract for on-shore facilities will be awarded by June 2006, and orders for supply of navigational aids and port crafts will be placed by July 2006.
