CHENNAI: : The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, on Monday said that he was sure that the Tamil Nadu Essential Services Maintenance Act will be withdrawn as Assembly elections were approaching. In a statement, he said that there was no reason to worry on account of this, though, till now, the State Government had not responded to repeated pleas for the withdrawal of the Act. On the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa writing to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, on the Cauvery water issue, he said that the Chief Minister seemed to have "woken up" after the Democratic Progressive Alliance resolution urged Dr. Singh to intervene in the issue. This was not an isolated issue of the Chief Minister "waking up late to tackle an issue," he contended and said that the withdrawal of amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code, was one such instance. Though she had promised to promulgate an Ordinance annulling the amendments, she had not done so. Mr. Karunanidhi compared this with the Ordinance to do away with the age limit and the tenure limits of the State Election Commissioner.
