Commodity rates

Following were the rates (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Monday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry:

Groundnut oil-52.50, palmolein oil-39.50, sunflower oil-50, tamarind (flower variety)-22 to 29, tamarind (karipuli variety)-42 to 47, chillies (refrigerated)-15 to 20, chillies (non-refrigerated-10 to 12, rice (2716)-13.50, rice (super fine)-15, rice (sona masoori)-17 to 19, rice (samba masoori)-16 to 17.50, black gram-27 to 28 and red gram-26.30 to 31.50.

Call to improve dhobi ghat amenities

Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Washermen Cooperative Society Federation, M. Anjanaiah, has asked the Vijayawada municipal corporation authorities to improve basic amenities at the nine dhobi ghats located in the corporation limits. Dr. Anjaiah visited dhobi ghats at Augonagar, Ranigarithota, Seetannapeta, Lambadipeta, Mutyalampadu and Gunadala Center and interacted with washermen. Following a review meeting on Monday, he advised the municipal officials to look into the longstanding problems of the community.

`Emphasis on quality'

The vice-president of the Bestavision Television Company, S. S. Sandhu has said that his company had prepared the ground for supply of quality electronic equipment at reasonable prices. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Sandhu said the company was making a comeback after a brief gap and would lay emphasis on key factors like quality and post-sale service to its customers.

Film on AIDS to be screened

The District AIDS Control Officer, B.Jagannadh Naik, on Monday said a Telugu film on AIDS awareness, `Nissabddanni Chediddam,' would be shown in city theatres for four days, beginning Wednesday. The movie would be shown free of cost. The Krishna district Collector, Naveen Mittal, would inaugurate the first show at Swarna Palace. The film would be screened at Jayram theatre on the same day. On Thursday, it would be screened by Vijayakrishna theatre in Krishnalanka and Durgamahal theatre in Patamata, on Friday, in Srinivasa Mahal and Raghavendra theatres and on Saturday, in Santosh theatre in Paykapuram. All the shows would begin at 9 a.m.

Freedom fighter remembered

Members of the City Congress Committee on Monday paid tributes to the former MLA and freedom fighter, Marupilla Chitti, to mark his 34th death anniversary.

The chairman of the Vijayawada Guntur Tenali Mangalagiri -Urban Development Authority, Malladi Vishnu, garlanded the late Congress leader's portrait at Andhra Ratna Bhawan. Senior leaders like Ilapuram Venkaiah, and others recalled the valuable services rendered by Marupilla Chitti for the party.

Industry alliance programme launched

The K.L College of Engineering and the US-based Resonance Holdings have jointly launched an Industry Alliance Programme (IAP), a 100 per cent job assurance package. Under the programme, select students from B.Tech courses would be imparted training in soft skills, management and technical subjects.

The objective is to spot young talent and train them adequately to enhance job opportunities.
