MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of the Karnataka State Government Revenue Department Village Assistants' Association has welcomed the State Government's decision to double the remuneration paid to village assistants to Rs. 2,000. This increase is effective from April 1 and the village assistants will be paid arrears for the period after that. The honorary president of the association, Janardhan Bantwal, told presspersons here on Monday that the order of the Government will benefit 10,450 village assistants in the State. These posts were created as per two separate government orders of September 16, 1978 and September 23, 1982, he said. The Government has fulfilled a long-standing demand of the association. Mr. Janardhan said village assistants, who work under village accountants, were paid a remuneration of Rs. 100 when the post was created in 1978. They have been working for a remuneration of Rs. 1,000 for some time now, he said. The association had requested the authorities concerned and the Government to increase this amount. The Government took a decision to this effect at a Cabinet meeting held recently. The file is with the Finance Department for approval and the amount will be released to the village assistants shortly. He thanked Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Revenue Minister M.P. Prakash for their gesture. Mr. Janardhan urged the Government to consider some of the demands of the association. They are: providing a job on compassionate grounds to the kin of village assistants who die in harness, sanctioning 30 days annual leave and extending life insurance facilities to them.
