TIRUPUR: "The dyers have understood the gravity of the problem and have risen to the occasion. We are ready to install reverse osmosis plants to attain zero discharge and all we need is time,'' pleads N. Kandasamy, president of the Dyers Association of Tirupur. With the threat of closure of most of the units, Mr. Kandasamy ascertains that "whatever might have happened in the past (not adhering to the pollution control norms), the same would not be repeated in the future." Speaking to The Hindu , he said putting up RO plants and attaining zero effluent discharge was not like buying a car or any household thing. It involves construction of building. With all the common effluent treatment plants registered under the Companies Act, they have to follow certain procedures in finalising tenders that need statutory intervals between technical bid and price bid. "All the more, the technology is new, manufacturers are new and membranes have to be imported." Urging the Governments to pull them out of the crisis, he said the dyers had purchased lands to construct plants. Mr. Kandasamy said they had spent a lot towards compensation to the affected farmers, desilting of Orathupalayam dam and purchase of land for RO plants. "If the dyeing units are closed, we would lose Rs. 6,000 crores of foreign exchange and employment for nearly 10 lakh people."
