A new sanctuary at Chilka

BHUBANESWAR: The Chilka, India's largest brackish water lake, already has a bird sanctuary in Nalaban island. Now it will have another sanctuary — for its resident Irrawady dolphins.

Tourists routinely throng the Satapada area of the lagoon to see over a hundred such dolphins cavorting in the waters.

A meeting of the Chilka Development Authority, presided by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, took the decision on the new sanctuary here on Monday. The State Government will prepare a master plan for the development of eco-tourism in the lake including in the sanctuary.

The meeting discussed the need to make the lake pollution-free. Participants expressed concern over the construction of prawn gheries and the siltation of the catchment areas.

Mr. Patnaik praised the hydrological intervention for the restoration of the lake; he said it had improved the water quality, eco-system and fishery resources. Efforts must be made to conduct research on the lake's biodiversity while putting stress on increasing productivity, he said. — PTI
