Cultural and historical links between Kannur and the Lakshadweep islands were touched upon by Kannur MP A.P. Abdullakutty and District Collector K.S. Srinivas during their discussion with Administrator of Lakshadweep Parimal Rai on Monday on the proposed construction of a dedicated wharf on the coast in the region. Parimal Rai appreciated the earnest efforts of the MP and the Collector to ensure that the Azhikkal port in Kannur be chosen for the proposed project. But his consideration, he said, would be whether the facilities at Azhikkal would be more beneficial to the people of the islands than, say, the existing port at Beypore. "We have to look at the nuts and bolts of the project before we choose a site," he said. Azhikkal port, which was once an important minor port in the region, is now looking for some activity that will revive its importance. The Lakshadweep Administration's proposed project, therefore, is seen as something to hope for. No wonder then that the authorities invoked the memories of the past links.
