Summer school on human rights

The Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy and Training (MILAT)--a Thiruvananthapuram-based educational institution to be headed by the former member of the National Law Commission, N. R. Madhava Menon--would organise a summer school on human rights from August 12 to 21 at Kovalam.

MILAT also plans to organise an international competition for law students on mediation practice early next year and would also shortly announce a short term Legal Practice course to assist young law graduates to find suitable placements in the profession. According to the executive director of MILAT S. Sivakumar the organisation also plans to assist the judicial fraternity in developing capacities for `social context judging' for which Bench Books are being prepared.

Dr. Menon is scheduled to give up his directorship of the National Juridical Academy, Bhopal later this year to assume charge of MILAT. According to Dr. Sivakumar the centre plans to be a centre providing legal training and advocacy in WTO-related cases and cases pertaining to social justice and for public legal education.
