ERODE: With the weaving town of Chennimalai in the grip of water scarcity, the panchayat provides water once in 18 days. Panchayat officials say that due to reduced receipt of Cauvery water, they could not supply water once in five days, as is the practice. Residents complain that due to the present supply, they are forced to purchase water from lorries. The Chennimalai panchayat with a population of over 20,000 gets water from Oddankuttai and Cauvery Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme. Water is provided to the public through 120 public fountains, and 32 connections to industries. The panchayat received 1,400 applications for new water connections, which have been pending for the past 12 years. It could not provide new connections, as they do not get adequate water. After the Second Cauvery Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme, they would give new connections, the officials say. Due to the steep reduction in the level of the Oddankuttai, they could not pump enough water. Further, every day they got 15 lakh litres of water for the supply under the Scheme, but for the last 20 days they got only 10 lakh litres.
Second scheme
The solution for the scarcity will be the Second scheme, to be completed by next year. Officials and public urged the district administration to expedite the work for the Second scheme. Water could be supplied to residents through lorries by the panchayat, residents feel.
