ERODE: More than 200 tonnes of copra arrived at the Avalpoondurai Regulated Market in Erode taluk on Monday. Secretary of the Erode District Regulated Marketing Committee A. Venkatachalam told The Hindu on Tuesday that on every Friday, auction would be conducted in the market. But due to huge arrival, it had been decided to conduct auction on Mondays too. On Monday, 150 tonnes of copra was sold at Rs. 30 to Rs. 33 a kg. The National Agricultural Marketing Federation, through the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Marketing Federation, would procure copra from coconut farmers from July 21 at a cost of Rs. 35.70 a kg. Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments P.C. Ramasamy will inaugurate the procurement to be made at Dharapuram Cooperative Marketing Society. Collector D. Karthikeyan told reporters on Monday that copra would be procured only from the farmers of the district who had identification cards given by the Agriculture and Revenue Departments. For new cards, farmers should register their names with the departments after giving proof for the trees they had. A vigilance committee had been formed with officials of Revenue, Cooperative and Agriculture Departments to check the stock.
