VISAKHAPATNAM: They are not asking for new trains or extension of the existing ones. They just want a two-minute halt for all Express trains passing through Duvvada Railway Station. But, the Railway authorities are reluctant to meet their demand. "This halt will save time and money of about five lakh people, most of whom are employees of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Visakhapatnam Special Economic Zone, NTPC, BHPV and Hindustan Zinc, residing in and around Duvvada, Kurmannapalem, Autonagar, Pedagantyada and Gajuwaka. They can avoid travelling about 25 km to Visakhapatnam or Anakapalle Railway Stations," says the convener of the Duvvada Railway Station Users Association, K. Eswar. The association has been representing the matter to the Railway authorities in Visakhapatnam, Secunderabad, Bhubaneswar and New Delhi but to no avail.
`Taxi'ng fare
At present, passenger trains and a few Express trains stop at Duvvada. Duvvada Railway Station, situated on the Chennai-Howrah trunk route, is an important interchange point between East Coast and South Central Railways. Halts to all Express trains will provide a convenient mode of transport to commuters travelling from Visakhapatnam and Anakapalle to industries, which are located in and around Duvvada. "Taxi and autorickshaw fares to either Visakhapatnam or Anakapalle are sometimes more than the railway fare," says Mr. Eswar.
