South has a better pool of talent

  • India produces 3,50,000 engineers every year
  • The number of engineering colleges in the country is increasing by 20 per annually
  • 60 per cent students taking up software for specialisation

    BANGALORE: Southern States lead in the availability of talent pool and a study by MeritTrac Services, a competence assessment and pre-recruitment process outsourcing service provider, shows significant variance between the academic performance and that in the IT abilities test.

    The survey results on fresh engineering graduates, with a sample of around 25,000 graduates across seven States, will provide HR professionals and decision-makers in the technology sector, insight into the fresh talent pool available and the key challenges companies face. With more engineering colleges opened in rural areas, it has increased the spread of the talent pool.

    Training or orientation programmes can raise the quality of candidates by at least 30 per cent without lowering current standards adopted by recruiting companies.

    Madan Padaki, Co-founder and Director of MeritTrac Services, said that "the timing of the survey is extremely strategic since most companies are looking to fill their increasing talent demand with fresh engineering graduates as the existing experienced talent pool is inadequate to enable achievement of recruitment targets."

    He said it is imperative to bring about a change in the curriculum design and focus more on faculty development and most importantly in student evaluation. Another clear long-term direction for the industry and the academia is to evolve a common certification system for standard skills.

    A common certification system can expand the talent pool and enable India to retain its competitive advantage despite spiralling cost structures.
