AUSPICIOUS RITUAL: Sahasrakalasom being performed at the Lord Ayyappa Temple in Sabarimala on Tuesday.
PATHANAMTHITTA: Hundreds of devotees witnessed the auspicious sahasrakalasom ritual performed at the Lord Ayyappa Temple in Sabarimala on Tuesday. At first, Tantri Kantaru Mohanaru performed kalasa puja at the Namaskara mandapam. Later, the brahma kalasom was taken to the sanctum sanctorum in a procession to the accompaniment of the sacred marappani and other temple orchestra. The Tantri, assisted by Melsanthi V. Muraleedharan Namboodiri, performed sahasrakalasabhishekom on the Ayyappa idol prior to utcha puja. Pushpabhishekom and padi puja were also performed. Another sahasrakalasom will be performed at the temple on Wednesday. The auspicious kalabhabhishekom will be performed on July 21 and the temple will be closed after athazha puja later in the evening.
Demolition begins
Meanwhile, the Travancore Devaswom Board has started demolition of the small shrines dedicated to Karuppayiyamma, Valiyakadutha and Karuppaswami on either side of the holy 18 steps. Sabarimala executive officer V.S. Rajagopalan Nair said that the demolition would be over in the next few days and new shrines would come up at the same place itself. The shrine dedicated to Kochukadutha at the Malikappuram Devi Temple complex had already been demolished. Work on all the shrines will be completed before the beginning of the next Mandalam season, he added.
