DAVANGERE: The Chief Executive Officer of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat, Jitendra Naik, has called upon those manning e-grama centres to provide information about the ongoing programmes of the Union and State governments to villagers so that they can avail themselves of the schemes. Distributing loans to rural educated unemployed youth to set up e-grama centres, and Kisan Samadhan cards of the Bank of India, which observed Kisan Day here on Tuesday in association with Grameena Mahiti Parishat, Mr. Naik said that through e-grama centres, vital information about agriculture and related subjects can be disseminated among farmers in an effective way. He noted that e-grama has become a powerful medium to educate farmers about various subjects. There is an urgent need to provide information about different schemes and programmes of the Government and about horticulture, floriculture and poultry to the villagers through e-grama centres.
Rainwater harvesting
It is time that the farmers are educated about check dams, ponds and soil and water conservation, Mr. Naik said and added that the zilla panchayat is planning to take up a programme to motivate farmers to harvest rainwater. He recalled how people from a backward tribe in Udupi, who were taught about making plates using a leaf, have started exporting their product to France. He asked farmers to be enterprising and said there are many agriculture-related fields to earn good income. P.V. Krishna Murthy, Assistant General Manager, Bank of India, Bangalore, said farmers can use Kisan Samadhan cards distributed by the bank for many purposes. They can use it to draw money based on their eligibility, and the bank will charge interest ranging from 8 per cent to 10 per cent depending on the amount of loan taken, he added. Mr. Murthy said the bank, which was nationalised on July 19, 1969, is committed to the welfare of farmers. Farmers can even access matrimonial information at the e-grama centres. The bank will provide loans to more rural unemployed youth to set up e-grama centres in rural places. The bank has decided to post an Agriculture Officer to the Davangere branch so that farmers who approach the bank to avail themselves of different schemes of the bank, will be immediately attended to. S.G. Kudremothi, District Development Manager of NABARD, said farmers in Maharashtra change the crop in accordance with the rainfall, which is made known through a computer network. K.M. Parashivamurthy, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department, called upon farmers to take up horticulture and floriculture. S. Basavarajappa, a progressive farmer and former President of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat, explained the uses of e-grama centres. H.R. Lingaraj, president of the Taluk Krishik Samaj, spoke.
