A new chapter

The warmth with which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been received in Washington shows the recognition of India's economic and technological progress by the U.S. Government. A strong partnership, the growth of which had nothing to do with official U.S. or India, has developed between the two countries in several fields, notably information technology, over the last few years. India's phenomenal progress has made it difficult for the U.S. to ignore the country.

Another reason for the effusive hospitality could also be the need to erase the bitterness generated by the recent disclosure of the insulting remarks made by Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger about Indians.

A. Umakantha Sarma,
Mountain View, California

Haven't we seen similar spectacles before? The U.S. will provide only lip service to India's concerns on the continuing terrorism across the LoC. It not only coddles Pakistan but also sells arms to it. It is a colossal failure of Indian diplomacy that the U.S. is getting away with such duplicity.

Suresh Sheth,
Houston, Texas
