DINDIGUL: A triple life term was awarded to four persons accused in the murder of the BJP State Executive Committee member, Manicka Nadar, and a BJP district functionary, Selvaraj. Principal Sessions Court Judge P. Kalaiarasan on Tuesday convicted and awarded the sentence to Meera Mydeen; Mohammad Khan, brother of Al-Umma leader S.A. Batcha; Mohammad Subair, brother-in-law of Batcha; and Abdul Ajis of Madurai under sections 120(B), 147, 148, 341 and 302 and 302 read with 149 of the Indian Penal Code. Meera Mydeen was awarded triple life plus two-year rigorous imprisonment and Rs. 1,000 fine and Mohammad Subair. Triple life and three year RI plus fine of Rs. 1,000 were given to Abdul Ajis and Mohammad Khan. The sentences were directed to run consecutively. The convicts were sent to Madurai prison. The other accused, Raja Hussain; Kaja Nijamudeen alias Kuttiappa, member of Melapalayam council in Tirunelveli; Sahul Hamid and Syed Ibrahim, were acquitted. The acquitted accused were sent back to prison as other cases, including ones relating to the Kodungaiyur bomb blasts, were filed against them. Another accused, Rifayudheen of Sivakasi died while the trial in the case was going on.
According to the prosecution, Manicka Nadar and Selvaraj were murdered at 9.30 p.m. on January 10, 1997 while returning home from their shop. The North police filed a case. Later, the case was transferred to CBCID police. The Special Investigation Team filed the charge sheet on June 22, 2001. The case had come up for hearing on February 2, 2004. SIT Superintendent of Police, A.M.S. Gunaseelan had helped prosecution conduct the case. S. Jayabalan was the public prosecutor. Hearing and witnesses examinations were conducted from October 11, 2004 to June 28, 2005. The prosecution produced 35 witnesses, 41 documents and 30 forms of evidence.
