Get ready to join the heritage walk

Want to have the smell of Madurai city, which has a 2000-year-old history?

Every Maduraite knows a bit of its history. But if you want to know more about King Tirumalai Nayak's stable, history of Stable Street, Ten Pillar Street, B-1 police station and 200-year-old printing machine made in England, get ready to join the heritage walk, which will kick-start at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday.

The walk will emphasise the city's cultural heritage, achievements, social progress and history. It begins at Tirumalai Nayak Palace with a brief introduction on the route through which the walkers will explore the city's heritage buildings in a virtual setting. It will culminate at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

Talking to the reporters on Monday, M.D. Vel, immediate past chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry, Madurai zone, said, "Madurai has too many things of which you could be proud of. It is the city where the old and modern facilities co-exist to tell tales of the past and the present." It was an attempt to showcase the city's ancient origin to attract more tourists.

Ligi George, vice-chairman, CII, briefed about the objectives of the walk. The walk would motivate the citizens, tourists and stakeholders to experience centuries of culture and heritage, help the people develop a collective sense of belonging and showcase Madurai to the world.

It would also motivate them to preserve monuments and heritage sites and have better appreciation of the culture, hygiene, cleanliness and so on.

Similar walks would be arranged on every third Saturday from different destinations and routes.

Over 200 citizens are expected to participate in the walk including the Collector, D. Raajendiran, and T.S. Sridhar, Commissioner, Archaeological Department.

In association with the Travel Club, the CII has organised the walk.
