Centre's nod sought to augment police strength: Rangasamy

Special Correspondent

PONDICHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Tuesday said that he had requested the Union Home Ministry to sanction one more unit of India Reserve Battalion (IRB) for Pondicherry and also approve of the proposal to recruit more Home Guards.

He said already the Centre had sanctioned one unit of IRB (a para military force to supplement Pondicherry police in maintaining law and order). With the burgeoning population, expansion of the housing zones and increased developmental activities the role of police had increased.

Similarly, the number of Home Guards also needed to be increased.

In an informal chat with presspersons, Mr. Rangasamy said his Government would initiate necessary measures to protect the rights of the Scheduled Castes of Pondicherry origin.
