Leptospirosis claims one life

DAVANGERE: An outbreak of leptospirosis (rat fever) has claimed one life in Chiluru village of Honnali taluk, and scores of children have been admitted to various hospitals in Davangere. A girl from the same village has been admitted to the Chigateri hospital with dengue.

The Deputy Commissioner of Davangere district, Dyaberi, said that Jagadish, 22, was admitted to the general hospital at Honnali with fever on July 12. Tests revealed that he had leptospirosis. He died on July 17 while being taken to Bangalore for treatment. Steps have been taken to prevent the spread of the diseases, he added.

results today

BANGALORE: The results of the fourth year BHM and first year BBM annual scheme and second year BBM examinations of Bangalore University held during April/May 2005 will be announced on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The results are also available on the website www.vidyalaya.org.

Three selected for `Halakattishri'

Bidar: Shivshankar Tokre, a teacher in the government polytechnic here has been selected for the "Halakattishri" instituted by the Vachana Pitamaha Fa. Gu. Halakatti Pratishtana Samiti of Mahalingpur in Bagalkot.

Vijayalakshmi Balekundri, heart surgeon, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology; Ramzan Dargah, journalist; and Akkana Balaga in Gadahinglaj, Maharashtra, are the other recipients, said a press release by B.M. Patil, president of the samiti.

VTU conducting training programme

Belgaum: Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is conducting its second CAD, CAM and CAE software training programme for faculty members of colleges affiliated to VTU at its Jnana Sangam campus here. The programme was inaugurated by the VTU Vice-Chancellor, K. Balaveera Reddy, on Monday.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Reddy said the programme, being conducted for two weeks in two phases, is aimed at exposing the faculty to the latest developments in teaching aids.

Twenty-five faculty members from various affiliated colleges are participating in the programme conducted by experts from Design Tech., Pune. — Staff Correspondent

Subbanna's contribution hailed

Bangalore: K.V. Subbanna, the well-known theatre personality who passed away on Saturday, reversed the one-sided flow of culture from villages to urban areas back to the villages, the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has said in a condolence message.

Mr. Chaturvedi said Subbanna was a Gandhian with socialist leanings. As people started coming to witness his new experiments with theatre, he modernised the stage and added glamour by adopting the latest technology in theatre shows, he said.

Reservation sought

in private sector

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Backward Communities' Federation has urged the State Government to immediately bring in reservation in cooperative and private sector enterprises.

In a meeting of the federation here on Tuesday, its president, Naveenchandra Suvarna, welcomed the observations made by the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, on the issue.

The federation also expressed its concern over the delay in the supply of textbooks. Even though schools have been open for two months, many children are still in search of textbooks, which shows the Government's indifference towards education, it said.

Court stays summons

to Yediyurappa

BANGALORE: The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday stayed the issue of process (summons) by a Belgaum court in a defamation case against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa. Mr. Yediyurappa had moved the court for staying the process issued against him on February 3, 2005 by the Junior Magistrate First Court (JMFC), 3rd Court, Belgaum. The JMFC had taken cognisance of a private complaint from Shankar Munnavalli, Congress leader. Mr. Munnavali said the BJP leader had made defamatory statements against him after he "exposed" the disrespect shown by BJP workers to the national flag. — Staff Reporter

Labourers' plea

to Deve Gowda

MANGALORE: Labourers who lost their jobs in Poornima Cargo Movers, a company engaged by the Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers have appealed to the President of the Janata Dal (Secular), H.D. Deve Gowda, to intervene and get them reinstated. As many as 152 labourers, who claim to be the former employees of the Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers, have been staging a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office for the past 36 days under the banner of the MCF General Workers' Union. The convenor of the union, B.S. Chandru, in a press release a JD(S) delegation has gone to Bangalore to meet Mr. Deve Gowda. — Special Correspondent

Near-total bandh in Kurgodu

BELLARY: A near-total bandh was observed in the temple town of Kurgodu, about 30 km from here, on Tuesday. The bandh, in response to a call given by the Citizens' Forum, was observed to protest against the destruction of a Nandi idol at the Vajrabande Basappa Temple on the outskirts of the town on Friday. Shops and other business establishments, including hotels, remained closed. A procession was taken out and a human chain was formed at the Rajashekar Gowda Circle. — Staff Correspondent

BDA submits records

of site allotment

BANGALORE: The State Government on Monday submitted to the High Court of Karnataka records pertaining to the allotment of a BDA (Bangalore Development Authority) site to the then Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The records were placed following a direction by a Division Bench comprising the Chief Justice, Nauvdeep Kumar Sodhi, and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer, which is hearing a petition challenging the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order directing the Government and the UPSC to revise the list of non-KAS officers from the State selected to the IAS cadre. — Staff Reporter

Enteritis in Bijapur village

BIJAPUR: At least 40 persons are suffering from severe gastro-enteritis at Jeeralabavi village in Basavanabagewadi taluk. Many of them have been admitted to the Nidagundi Primary Health Centre and Muddebihal and Basavanabagewadi taluk hospitals even as district administration rushed a medical team to the village on Tuesday. As borewell water is brackish, the villagers are forced to drink water collected from village "nala," which is also contaminated.

RAICHUR: Venkatswamy, 20, son of Maddbassappa, was killed on the spot when he slipped and fell down from an overhead tank while he was cleaning it at the staff quarters in Shakthinagar near here on Monday. The Shakthinagar Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Dies of burns

RAICHUR: Sharanamma, 22, daughter of Veerupakshappa, who received severe burns when she tried to light a kerosene stove in her house at Sindhanur town on Monday, died at the civil hospital at Sindhanoor the same day.

Ten injured

RAICHUR: Ten people were injured when a lorry by which they were travelling overturned and fell into a ditch near Manvi Cross in Sirwar on Monday. The Sirwar Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

RAICHUR: The Lingsugur police arrested Veerabahadra, son of Pampanna, on the charge of cheating a merchant in Lingsugur town on Monday.

The police said the accused approached Manohar Singh, a cloth merchant, posing as an officer from the Tax Department and demanded that he produce the accounts. But the merchant caught him after he came to know that he was an impostor and handed him over to the police. He has been remanded in judicial custody. — Staff Correspondent

Four held

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Mahaboobali, Veeresh, Maqbool and Modnsab on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 2,000 from them in Turvihal and Mudgal towns on Monday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. — Staff Correspondent

Power cut

BIDAR: Power supply will be disrupted in and around Bhalki and Halbarga on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as maintenance work on the 33-kv station at Halbarga will be taken up that day, said a press release by the Executive Engineer of the Gulbarga Electric Supply Company. — Staff Correspondent

Reservoir level falls

SHIMOGA: The district is experiencing a dry spell for the last two days, which has stagnated the level of the reservoirs.

The Linganamakki Reservoir has barely risen by three inches in the last 24 hours. It stood at 1779.50 feet on Tuesday against a maximum of 1,819 feet.

Its catchment area received 2.2 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The level of the Bhadra Reservoir stood at 143.9 feet on Tuesday against the maximum level of 186 feet.

Bhadravati received 2.4 mm rainfall, Hosnagar 2.0 mm, Shikaripur 2.2 mm, Shimoga12.8 mm and Tirthahalli 2 mm rainfall while Sagar and Sorab taluks received no rains.

Warning to weapon owners

SHIMOGA: The Additional District Magistrate has asked those owning licensed weapons in the radius of 10 km coming in the jurisdiction of the Shimoga Wildlife Division comprising the taluks of Shimoga, Bhadravati and Tirthahalli, to furnish details about their licenses as required under the provisions of the Wildlife Act 1972.

He said that the licenses would be cancelled if the owners of the weapons do not comply with the provisions of the Act. — Special Correspondent
