Being implemented with the assistance of the Blood Donors Forum

KOZHIKODE: The State-wide greening initiative, `Vriksholsavam-05,' will be formally inaugurated at the district level here on July 21.

Mayor Thottathil Raveendran will inaugurate the programme at the Beach Hospital premises. District panchayat president M. K. Nalini among others will participate in the programme being implemented with the assistance of the Blood Donors Forum.

Deputy Conservator of Forests, Social Forestry, M. Murali said the programme is being carried out in association with the District Panchayat and Non-Government organisations. The programme was already on in the district in view of the active monsoon rains since the last one month. The target is to plant as many as 65,000 saplings in the district.

The District Panchayat president is the chairperson of the district committee. Committees are being set up at the grama panchayat level to implement the Vriksholsavam initiative.

Two saplings (`smrithi vriksham') will be planted as a tribute to the late CPI leader P. K. Vasudevan Nair and former Mayor and councillor P. T. Madhusudhana Kurup.

The programme is also being launched at the Mental Health Centre, Kuthiravattom where two acres of land is available to plant more than 1,000 trees, with a sponsorship sum of Rs. 4,000. While efforts are on to identify vacant land for tree planting, the spacious premises of the ITI at Malikkadave near Kunduparambu is a spot which has been identified for the greening initiative.

The banks of the Kakkodi river is another spot in the district which has also been identified for tree planting. The non-governmental organisations that have identified vacant land were requested to contact the Social Forestry personnel.

The Forest Department will monitor the planting drive. Poetess and environmental activist Sugatha Kumari is the chairperson of the State-level committee set up to implement the programme.
