KOZHIKODE: Corruption has weakened the Congress and the unholy nexus among politicians belonging to different parties has prevented the exposure of corruption, KPCC vice-president Mullappally Ramachandran has said. Speaking at a meeting organised on Tuesday to mark the fifth death anniversary of the Congress leader, the late M.R. Prasad, Mr. Ramachandran said that it was this unholy nexus that had stood in the way of an impartial inquiry into corruption charges, including the one involving the SNC-Lavlin contract. "Corruption charges should be discussed in public and not in the Assembly alone,'' he said, referring to the ongoing discussions on the no-trust motion in the Assembly. Stressing the need for Congressmen to launch a war to root out corruption in the party, Mr. Ramachandran said the Congress had a great tradition of getting rid of corrupt leaders. He referred to the stringent action taken by the late Jawaharal Nehru during his tenure as Prime Minister against those charged with corruption. ``The Congress is weak, but it is not dead," he said, reminding party supporters that a relentless battle against corruption was needed to restore the party's lost glory. Congressmen in the city were urged to revive the glorious traditions which had once endeared their party to the people. The battle against corruption could begin in Kozhikode, he said, while reminding partymen that the city was once home to some of the most revered Congress leaders. He appealed to partymen to follow the path of these leaders so that the Congress would once again regain its lost glory. "Congress traditions have deep roots in Kozhikode. We have to revive these traditions," he said. Mr. Ramachandran gave away the M.R. Prasad award for probity in public life to T.A. Mathew Master at the function. DCC president M. Veerankutty also spoke.
