A physically challenged volunteer of the Communist Party of India was the cynosure of all eyes the other day when the party announced a `rail roko' agitation to press the Central and State governments to release the Cauvery water into Tamil Nadu as per the directive from the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. The 24-year-old volunteer, S. Manikandan from Sripuranthan near Ariyalur, had both his legs crippled due to polio attack. He was so cheerful exhibiting his enthusiasm to fight for the riparian rights of the Tamil Nadu farmers. Undeterred by his physical disability, he was seen leading a group of farmers from Sripuranthan and neighbouring villages to the railway station in Ariyalur where the `rail roko' was to be held. Mr. Manikandan said that he had been participating in various agitations sponsored by the CPI from time to time. He has been an active member of the party for the past one decade.
